The 2019 STEP Ahead Award Nominations are open!

2019 STEP Ahead Award nominations opened August 1 and close October 5. Consider nominating a female  peer or colleague for this prestigious award by the Manufacturing Institute. Recipients of the award receive not only national recognition but also an invitation to attend a two-day leadership program in Washington, DC that focuses on enhancing both the skills they need to continue succeeding, as well as the tools to mentor the next generation of women in manufacturing. To date, 802 women who are making a difference in their companies and communities have been recognized since 2012. FLATE and the Florida Association for Career and Technical Education (FACTE) are working together to coordinate the 2017 FLATE Awards and recognition program. The FLATE Awards are geared to recognize secondary and post-secondary educators, and industry professionals for their outstanding contributions to promote and support technology education and career awareness in manufacturing. FLATE's Role in Florida's Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Creation

FLATE continues its partnership efforts with FloridaMakes to be the driving point for manufacturing education excellence. As indicated in our October edition of the FLATE Focu s, a three pronged manufacturing situation reality is still the challenge to be dealt with: Baby boomers are leaving the technical workforce taking their valuable experience and skills with them.  Technology is changing pace exponentially and at no other time has technical innovation moved so quickly into the manufacturing sector. High skilled related manufacturing is moving back to the U.S. creating an even bigger demand on the manufacturer workforce needs. Although these issues magnify the skills gap problem Florida manufacturers face, they also mask the inherent nature of this skills gap.  The Engineering Colleges within the Florida University System produce national accredited B.S. Highlights from Hillsborough County STEM Fair

Every year FLATE supports the Hillsborough County School Board and the Florida Foundation for Future Scientists by serving as a judge for the Junior/Senior division of Annual Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair. The Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair has grown to be the largest in Florida and one of the largest in the nation, with over 1,900 entries from 2,500 students in grades K-12. During this event judges assisted to select twenty-six projects that will represent Hillsborough County in the 2017 State Science Fair, where over $200,000 worth of scholarships and awards will be given. The event involves approximately 1,500 projects from the brightest K-12 Hillsborough students in more than 190 public, private, charter, home, and virtual schools. Winners go on to compete at state and national levels.
