sTEm–at-Word Puzzle #61: Pump Part selection for thick fluid applications

Analysis: A new technician at a pump repair company is asked to rebuild positive displacement pumps for a customer that uses their pumps to transport viscous fluids.  The technician knows that for constant viscosity (constant thickness) fluids; a higher pump pressure applies a higher stress on the fluid; the Shear Rate of the fluid always increases linearly with Applied Stress; the fluid's Shear Rate value multiplied by the fluid's viscosity value always equals the Applied Stress value.  The tech knows this customer always uses their pumps to move a fluid that gets thinner when the pump applies more pressure on that moving fluid. The tech also reviews the graphic at the red and green data points and, even though there are no values provided on the ordinate (y-axis) or the abscissa (x-axis), is absolutely positive which Repair Kit to use.

Science Olympiad at HCC Brandon

FLATE supports many STEM based initiatives. This past Saturday, February 4, Hillsborough Community College’s Brandon Campus hosted a Science Olympiad. This Olympiad lines up with FLATE's mission to get more children involved in STEM. The Olympiad had a tremendous turnout of over 500 children. The children competed in teams, and there were 22 middle school teams and 25 high school teams. The Olympiad offered several different events that challenged the students in a variety of ways. Some events required planning prior to the Olympiad. An example of this is the Hovercraft event where a hovercraft was built prior to the event and brought to the Olympiad completed. After bringing their completed hovercraft to the Olympiad, the students had to test to see if their hovercraft functioned properly. Puzzles on Hiatus in Hyannis Port

The   sTEm-at Work Puzzle series is on hiatus.   It is likely the series will return.   However, as its slips out the door heading toward Hyannis Port, today's FLATE FOCUS has a reminder of what the puzzles are trying to do. The puzzles presented in the sTEm-at Work Puzzle series provided tools for that task.   The puzzles are cast within situations a technician might become involved with and at the level that the technician is expected to handle.   The visually striking qualities of these puzzles is there lack of specific values for the scalars represented as independent and dependent variables.   In addition, the plots presented (line, sinusoids, and exponentials) represent common waveforms that a technician is likely to encounter.      The intent here is to provide instructional avenues to the various measurement systems that are used to quantize the situation described by the scalars in the plot.
